Post-Operative Support from John Vartanian, M.D.

As a double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. John Vartanian is deeply invested in each patient’s outcome. Surgery is only the beginning—how you heal plays a critical role in your final results. That’s why post-op care is customized, detailed, and carefully explained to ensure clarity and confidence. Dr. Vartanian and his team provide written instructions and one-on-one support. The guidelines below offer a general overview of what to expect after facial procedures.

Immediately After Surgery

  • You will rest in a monitored recovery area until cleared to go home.
  • A responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
  • Keep your head elevated to minimize swelling.
  • Take medications exactly as prescribed.
  • Avoid touching or disturbing dressings, drains, or sutures.
  • Eat a light meal and drink fluids unless instructed otherwise.

First Week Post-Op

  • Bruising, swelling, and tightness are normal and expected.
  • Use cold compresses as directed to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid strenuous activity, bending, or lifting.
  • Sleep with your head elevated, even while napping.
  • Clean the surgical site gently if instructed to do so.
  • Attend your first follow-up appointment as scheduled.

Activity Restrictions

  • No smoking or vaping, as nicotine impairs healing.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking prescription pain medication.
  • Do not drive while on narcotics.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, or pools until Dr. Vartanian clears them.
  • Protect healing skin from sun exposure by staying indoors or wearing wide-brimmed hats.

Suture and Dressing Care

  • If you have external sutures, they may be removed within five to 10 days.
  • Internal sutures dissolve naturally.
  • Keep dressings dry unless otherwise instructed.
  • Call the office immediately if you notice excessive bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection.

Additional Aspects of Recovery

  • Feeling tired, emotional, or “off” is normal in the days after surgery.
  • Temporary changes in facial symmetry are common while healing.
  • Patience is key—try to avoid evaluating results too early.

Follow-Up Is Part of the Process

  • Follow-up visits are essential to monitor healing and remove sutures or drains if needed.
  • Dr. Vartanian may adjust your care plan based on your progress in recovery.
  • You will receive clearance for exercise, makeup, and social events once it is safe to resume.
