Fraxel® Repair

The Fraxel® repair is best suited for patients who wish to tighten moderate skin laxity and improve relatively deeper lines and wrinkles on the face. It can be used to treat the entire face, or it may be used to treat smaller areas such as the upper lip and eyelids. When the upper lip or eyelids are treated, the result is typically a much smoother upper lip and less wrinkled lower and upper eyelids. Fraxel® repair treatment can also improve skin texture, brown pigmentation, fine lines, broken vessels, freckles, and facial redness. In addition to its uses on the face, the Fraxel® repair may also be used to treat the neck and chest. In these non-facial locations, the laser treatment can again result in skin tightening, improved skin texture, reduction of freckles, reduction of wrinkling, and overall improved skin tone. The Fraxel® repair is FDA approved for the treatment of wrinkles, furrows, fine lines, textural irregularities, pigmented skin lesions, and vascular dyschromia (the medical term for broken capillaries and diffuse redness).

How It Works

The use of carbon dioxide as the source of the laser light in the Fraxel® repair treatment typically results in the laser being a more effective skin-tightener than the original/older Fraxel® lasers. In addition, it often allows us to complete the laser treatment in only a single treatment session. The Fraxel® repair utilizes Fractional Resurfacing Technology. The laser delivers a series of closely spaced microscopic laser spots to the skin while preserving normal healthy skin between the laser spots. This preservation of normal, untreated skin between the laser spots helps in rapid healing after the treatment.

What Are The Potential Benefits of Fraxel® Repair Treatment?

  • Significant skin improvement and results after a single treatment
  • Smoother, more even skin tone and texture
  • Softening of deep frown lines and wrinkles
  • Improved appearance of redness caused by sun damage
  • Improvement in broken vessels and skin imperfections (like freckles and brown spots)
  • General tightening of skin
  • Especially beneficial in tightening crepey / loose skin under the eyes and around the “smoker’s lines” surrounding the mouth.

Results

Treatment with the Fraxel® repair typically results in visible skin tightening and significant improvement in wrinkles and pigmentation in the treated areas. The skin heals with an improved texture. The result is smoother, tighter, and younger-looking skin. For a majority of patients, only a single treatment is needed. Some patients, however, may wish to undergo a second procedure to further enhance their results. Fraxel® repair treatment does have some downtime. A full-face treatment generally has three to five days of downtime. As each treatment is customized, Dr. Vartanian would give a better estimate of the downtime during an in-person consultation.

How Does Fraxel® Repair Rejuvenate the Skin?

As an ablative procedure, Fraxel® repair treatment uses a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to vaporize microscopic columns of tissue deep within the skin. Fraxel® repair treatment is a powerful procedure designed to treat the more advanced signs of skin damage.

Results are often achieved in 1-2 treatments, and wound care recovery time is usually 24-72 hours. The results of Fraxel® repair treatment are typically both immediate and progressive. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer, look brighter, and show a more even tone.

The next three to six months should bring more improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to heal, including improvement of loose skin, fine lines, and general tightening of the skin.

How Is Fraxel® Repair Treatment Performed, and Does the Treatment Hurt?

First, your skin will be cleansed. Then, 60 to 90 minutes prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area. We may also numb the skin with anesthetic facial injections for additional comfort, as well as give medication to relax you and lessen any discomfort. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes for a full facial procedure. Unlike the skin sensation with other CO2 laser treatments, one advantage of the Fraxel® repair is that the patients feel quite comfortable and pain-free after a Fraxel® repair treatment. Most patients report no need for pain medications after the treatment.
